‘Unlocking Space for Maritime Innovation’ strategy workshop, held in partnership with the 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub and Space North East England, and facilitated by the Satellite Applications Catapult, on November 26th, 2024.
The Port of Tyne is one of UK’s most innovative and efficient deep-sea ports, handling cargoes across five continents and driving the UK’s wider logistics ecosystem. The Port is home to the UK’s 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub, a partnership with DfT, Connected Places Catapult, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Nissan, Drax, North East Automotive Alliance, BT, Frazer Nash and Hitachi, to collaborate on maritime innovation and address technological challenges on a national and global scale.
In parallel, the UK space sector offers a range of satellite-based solutions that have the potential to transform many adjacent sectors, such as maritime operations. From improving navigation and route optimisation with real-time data, to enhancing environmental monitoring and sustainability efforts through precise satellite imaging, space technologies provide innovative tools that can address the unique challenges of modern ports.
The session was key to shaping the 2050 National Maritime Innovation Hub’s roadmap for using space data and technologies to drive the next wave of maritime innovation.
These capabilities can enhance safety, improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and improve customer experience across the maritime supply chain, enabling new business models, unlocking untapped market potential, and driving the development of smart, connected ports.
