We have a thriving, fast-growing space ecosystem where many of the businesses and capabilities are within an easy reach of each other. As one of the smallest English regions, the community is well-connected with each other and also with others in the UK and beyond.

Here, the space sector has grown tremendously over the last ten years. And today, more than 1300 people are employed by over 40 organisations in this sector in this region.

As the region that changed the world by pioneering the railways almost 200 years ago and the engine of the Industrial Revolution, the North East is embarking on a bold new mission.

In the last few years, we have seen space sector companies and universities flourish across the whole region. From adaptive optics and advanced electronics for major space missions and satellite application capabilities to space law and weather expertise, the future of space in the region is looking exciting.

With its proud track record of ingenuity, the region stands ready to take a giant leap into the future.
Innovation stakeholders
The region has a wealth of innovation assets capable of maximising the underutilised space data and technologies in areas such as renewable energy, smart ports, autonomous vehicles, immersive technologies, digital and advanced materials.

With close access to significant rural assets and the North Sea which will be home to the world’s largest offshore wind farm, the opportunity to innovate here is vast.

The five universities – Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside - have been working with Space North East England to provide research and training support to businesses. Their research portfolio in the sector is fast growing too.
